Most strategic plans aren't very strategic because most leaders focus on planning new tactics in light of what they're currently doing. However, true strategy has very little to do with what a company is currently doing, which is why few strategic plans are very strategic.

The answer to this question is simple yet often very complex. Put simply few if any business owners of any size fully understand the value that planning can and should play in developing the strategies and related goals that will help assure success. They often believe that planning is something they will do when they have the time.

Those that believe that a plan should be developed quite often purchase some off the shelf software program the purports to be the answer to ones planning needs. These programs have the participants fill in the blanks and quite often the end result does not contain the essential elements of successful planning process.
 
Successful business planning is an interactive exercise that carefully examines, and clarifies ones strengths, weaknesses as it relates to both the industry and the economy. It is a living document that if prepared properly can and should be used as a road-map for success. A road map that will enable the business owner to stay on course and to achieve his desired goals in a timely manner.  
 
While not hard to develop it is often difficult to properly create without assistance from a trained professional who will assure that every element is considered and properly incorporated into the final document. Part of this journey defines the value and usefulness of the process in terms specifically related to the business owner and his unique capabilities and desires. It is not a one size fits all process and requires WORK!
